SDS confirms Sportsfest Postponement

Student Development Services (SDS) Coordinator Dr. Armand G. Aton confirmed the postponement of Sportsfest 2025 due to insufficient funds to cover event expenses, particularly the fees for referees and recognition.

In an exclusive interview with The Flare on November 24, Dr. Aton said that the Imus campus initially allocated a budget for the event, but it was not approved by the Main Campus because there were additional requirements that still needed to be accomplished.

The administration proposed alternatives to proceed with the event, such as student-athletes serving as referees or the student organizations shouldering the referee fees for sports; specifically basketball and volleyball as well as replacing medals with printed certificates. These were all discussed during a meeting with student organizations, the publication unit, and the Central Student Government on November 19.

However,  these proposals were rejected by the student leaders as they were impractical.

Moreover, the Sportsfest 2025 will likely be moved to the next academic year ‘26-’27, instead of only in the second semester of the current academic year, as CvSU Imus is accustomed to shift its focus to the Cultural and Arts Festival (CAF) during that time.

Dr. Aton noted that they will try to include the Sportsfest event in next year's activities but they cannot fully guarantee it.

“I don't promise, ayaw naming i-promise na masisingit ito. Siguro ay isipin na lang natin….by next school year kasi by next year ay CAF naman ang concentration natin,” Dr. Aton said.

Despite the postponement, the participation of CvSU Imus in the University Games remains certain as the campus still has its former athletes from last year and that try-outs in different sports are still ongoing.

He also added that the try-outs are open for everybody, and though some may fail to proceed in U-GAMES, coaches will continue to train them.

“...That (try-outs) is open for everybody, ‘yung gusto mag-train at kung hindi man mapipili, e hindi man namin sila pinapadala sa field, we will continue training pa rin with them…” he said.

The Sportsfest is an annual campus-wide sports event conducted by CvSU Imus Campus, encompassing various sports competitions from team to individual sports. [F]
