The Cavite Communicators spearheaded “Gawad Periodista 2026,” marking a milestone in journalism recognition as it became the first program to honor journalism students, Department of Languages and Mass Communication (DLMC) instructors, and mainstream media practitioners in a single event, held at the CvSU-Imus Gymnasium on May 16.
The event highlights the recognition of winners in the Likha Periodista Film Festival (LPFF), where student-produced documentaries and films from the third and fourth year levels were awarded for excellence in storytelling, cinematography, directing, and social impact.
The event also recognized outstanding fourth-year student researchers during the Research Colloquium 2026. Awards were presented to students who excelled in research presentation, abstract writing, oral defense, thesis production, and impactful studies.
Faculty members and student leaders were likewise recognized for their service and contributions to the organization and department. Honors were given to educators for teaching excellence, leadership, and influence, while student officers and representatives received recognition for their commitment, participation, and service to the organization.
During the Spotlight Awards, veteran journalists and media personalities were honored for their contributions to journalism and broadcasting.
Among the awardees were Atom Araullo, who received the Most Outstanding News Anchor award; EJ Gomez, recognized as Most Promising Field Reporter; Kara David, awarded as Most Influential Media Personality; and Katrina Domingo, who received the Exemplary Pillar for Multimedia News Award.
Gomez expressed gratitude to the university and encouraged students to continue pursuing truthful and responsible reporting.
She also emphasized the importance of journalism at a time when facts and information are constantly challenged.
“Push niyo lang. I am rooting for you guys because right now, at a time when facts and information are often challenged and debated, mas nagiging mahalaga ang trabaho, yung duty, and most especially yung papel ng mga mamamahayag sa lipunan,” she stated.
Gomez further expressed hope that she would one day work alongside the students in the field.
Meanwhile, Domingo reminded students to remain grounded and prepared as they pursue journalism professionally.
“While you are here in the Cavite State University, I hope that you'll be on the necessary preparations, ground yourself in reality, and take in all the lessons that guided you as you graduate and move forward as professional journalists,” Domingo said.
She also thanked the university for continuously promoting truthful and responsible journalism.
Through Gawad Periodista 2026, CavComm and the DLMC mounted a recognition program that brought together national journalists, journalism students, and educators in one ceremony, highlighting their contributions and commitment to truthful and responsible journalism.
