The spotlight turned to the country’s top athletic standouts as the 2025 SMC Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Annual Awards Night unfolded, celebrating yet another year of excellence for Philippine sports at Diamond Hotel, February 16.
Organized annually by the Philippine Sportswriters Association, the event honors the nation’s most outstanding athletes, teams, and sports figures whose achievements elevated the country’s presence on both local and international stages in the year 2025.
The formal gathering brings together leaders from the sports community, national sports associations, corporate partners, and members of the media in what has become one of the most anticipated events in the Philippines sporting calendar.
Among the distinguished guests and awardees were Cynthia Carrion, president of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines, gymnastics standouts Carlos and Eldrew Yulo, and veteran coach Norman Black, whose recognition reflected the gold medal victory of Gilas Pilipinas at the Southeast Asian Games held in Thailand.
Former Philippine Basketball Association player JR Quiñahan also received the PSA’s first-ever Humanitarian Award for his relief efforts during Typhoon Tino last year, with his former coach Yeng Guiao accepting the honor on his behalf.
One of the highlights of the evening is the presentation of the Athlete of the Year recognition, particularly awarded to Carlos Yulo and Alex Eala for their outstanding performance this past year.
PSA Chairman Patrick Gregorio, named PSA Executive of the Year, emphasized stronger support for athletes, while Guiao, recipient of the PSA President’s Award, said the legal victory ensures better opportunities for future Filipino champions.
The awards night celebrated both achievements and the bright future of Philippine sports, signaling continued support for athletes and the promise of more champions to come.
