Every time Alex Eala steps on the court, she breaks barriers and writes history for Philippine tennis. Her recent success at the Miami Open, where she stunned three Grand Slam champions and reached her first WTA semifinal, marks another milestone in her young career.

Alexandra “Alex” Eala, 20, continues to prove why she is one of the brightest young stars in tennis. Coming in as a wild card at the 2025 Miami Open, she defied the odds and reached the semifinals, the first Filipina to achieve the feat.

Along the way, she defeated three big names: the 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko, reigning Australian Open winner Madison Keys, and five time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek. She did it all without dropping a set.

Eala became the first Filipino player to beat a top 10 opponent, and the first to break into the world’s top 100 rankings. Her wins in Miami alone surpassed what every Filipino player had ever accomplished at the tournament in the Open Era. She carried her momentum to the Jingsan Tennis Open 2025, where she won her first WTA tour title.

But this success did not come overnight. Eala started playing tennis at four years old, inspired by her grandfather and supported by her family. At 13, she moved to Spain to train at the Rafael Nadal Academy, where she honed her game under world-class guidance.

Her growth has been steady. She won junior doubles titles at the Australian Open in 2020 and French Open in 2021. In 2022, she became the first Filipino to win a junior Grand Slam singles title after her triumph at the US Open girls’ division.

Beyond the trophies, Eala’s story resonates because she represents a country where tennis is not a mainstream sport. She embraces that responsibility, saying her victories are not just for herself but for every young Filipino athlete who dares to dream.

“I’m so proud of myself and what I've accomplished. It’s made me feel hungry to do even more and to work even harder,” Eala shared her win in Miami.

For the Philippines, Eala’s journey is more than a sports story. It is proof that passion and hard work can turn dreams into reality. As she climbs higher in the rankings, her story will continue to inspire a generation of Filipinos who now see that world class tennis is within reach. [F]
